Abstract: This paper analyses the usage of mobile data services through an in-depth country study of Finland. Comprehensive data is utilised about the usage of mobile networks, devices, applications, and content, which comprise the four essential technical components of mobile services. Longitudinal and cross-sectional mobile service usage measurements were carried out annually in 2005-2008 covering 80-95% of all mobile users and service usage. Data and method triangulation was achieved by applying complementary data collection methods best aligned with each of the technical components, including usage monitoring systems, mobile network traffic measurements, and mobile operators? reporting system data. Results indicate that the enablers of mobile data service usage are diffusing. Mobile networks are being upgraded to accommodate the exponential growth of traffic generated mostly by laptop computers. Advanced handset features are also gradually taken into use by the masses, resulting in increased data service usage with mobile handsets. Application and content-wise, mobile Internet usage is approaching general Internet usage.
